There's just one thing standing in the way of you landing that perfect new job

Your CV

Here's how

You can get that all-important interview

for the perfect job you've always wanted,

even if you've never written a CV in your life

"Your Complete Interview Programme is Just a Click Away"

Dear Jobseeker,

You only get one chance to make a lasting impression and that's why your CV is the most important part of your job application process. Whether you're looking for your very first full-time job or whether you feel it's time to make a career move, your CV is your passport to the position you really want.

It can be a real tiresome exercise scouring the situations vacant sections of the press, highlighting or cutting out the ads, then sitting down to write your job application letters. And there can be nothing more frustrating when you don't even receive an acknowledgement of your application. You begin to wonder whether they received it in time and you begin to think perhaps it was mislaid or lost in the post.

The truth is the recruitment or HR manager didn't even give it a second glance. And to know that, doesn't help your self-esteem much does it? So your confidence takes a blow but you go through the whole process time and again, hoping and praying for that all-important interview.

If Only You Had The Opportunity To Prove Yourself

You know you can do the job you're applying for, if only someone would give you the chance to prove it. But when you can't even get short-listed for an interview, you know that's just never going to happen.

Competition for the best jobs is always fierce and recruiting managers could literally receive hundreds of applications from a wide spectrum of applicants. So they have to adapt a formula for the selection process, which is not going to be too time consuming, and which will filter out the most appropriate applications, virtually at a glance.

In these circumstances, your cover letter will be quickly scanned, but your CV must grab their attention right there and then. You only have a few precious seconds to make that lasting impression. You cannot afford for your CV to let you down, now that it's in the hands of the person who could help decide your entire future.

Your CV Must Be Laser Targeted

And that's why your CV is so important. CV writing has become an industry, with professional CV writers charging anything up to £200 for just 2 pages. But each CV can only be specifically created for any one particular position. So if you want to apply for a number of jobs, you'll need a CV, which highlights your experience, skills, qualifications and suitability for each one. A generic CV just will not do. Your CV must be laser targeted to one particular position, otherwise it will be considered nothing more than bin fodder.

You'll know when this happens because you'll receive a letter saying something like, "Thank you for your interest in the position of..............Unfortunately on this occasion your application has not been successful..." They will then go on to say how they will keep your application on file etc. It's just their polite way of telling you that your application has been binned. And sadly, all your efforts will have been in vain.

When you apply for a job, you must remember that you are offering your services to that company, and as such you must sell yourself as best you can. Always remember that your CV is your marketing tool. If it's professionally formatted, contains the relevant information and is presented correctly, it will help open the door to your future success in almost any area of work you choose.

How Can Your CV Avoid The

Recruitment Manager's Waste Paper Bin?

If you don't want your coveted CV to end up as part of the ever popular recycling process, keep reading...

The following is a quotation from the Census Bureau after conducting a survey of 10 million job seekers in order to identify successful job hunting tactics:

The findings of this survey reveal:

A CV or resume which is longer than 4 pages will be binned. This is generally the case, unless the prospective employer has requested a detailed career history. In most cases, CVs should be no longer than 3 pages, and resumes should be shorter.

A CV or resume that does not have a profile, or objective or similar paragraph and an easy discernible list of skills on the front page will be ignored. In the first instance, the recruitment manager will not devote their time to read your CV or resume in full, looking to find all the relevant information. Your skills, past achievements and qualifications should be presented clearly and concisely, where they will be instantly noticed.

A CV or resume, which is written in long drawn out sentences with lengthy paragraphs and impedes the identification of relevant information, simply will not get read. It's not the recruitment manager's job to read long essays or novels about your work history.

A CV or resume which is badly formatted and cluttered with varying font styles, sizes, colours and excessive use of underlining, bold and italics is irritating and has only one final destination. The waste bin. If it looks hard to read, it won't get read.

Would Your CV Survive Each Stage of the Filtering Process?

At the first stage of the filtering process, the recruitment manager is looking for what is specifically relevant to the vacant position. They simply want to identify what you have to offer and whether it matches the organisation's requirements. This information must be easily identifiable on the first page.

During the next stage of the process, the recruitment manager may spend a little more time in actually reading the CVs. They will now be looking for a specific or very close match to the job requirements. The applicants of the resulting chosen CVs will then be considered as potential candidates.

During the actual short-listing stage of the process, the recruitment manager will scrutinise the remaining CVs, and select only those that have a specific match or the closest possible match to the job requirements. The recruitment manager's method has now changed from elimination of irrelevant CVs and resumes to selecting highly relevant and quality matches.

If your CV has been fortunate enough to have reached this stage, the recruitment manager will be looking at the details of your application and venture beyond the first page of your CV. There will be a number of factors, which will ultimately affect the recruitment manager's decision with the two most important being:

The achievements the candidate has demonstrated from previous jobs, and...

What makes this candidate stand out from the others ?

From all the information available, the final interview list will be prepared, which will usually consist of 5 candidates or less. The reality of the recruitment process shows that you need a targeted and focused CV or resume that not only grabs attention by showing a skills match, but is also crafted, worded and formatted to give you an edge over other candidates.

Your job winning CV has to contain all the relevant information a prospective employer is looking for. And it has to be presented in a way that not only looks professional but speaks volumes about you, your experience, dedication, commitment and suitability for the position on offer.

Do you have a CV or resume which will lead to meeting the person responsible for the final decision making process?
